Monitoring

Every site checked, around the clock

Uptime as often as every minute, certificates and domains, speed on phones, a search and accessibility crawl, email and security. On every site you add, with nothing to install.

A site's page in TideStat: health, uptime, speed, search and accessibility figures, then 30 days of answer times with the one real outage marked

What TideStat watches

The things clients notice first, and the quiet ones they don't

Every problem these checks find goes into the Fix list, in plain English, worst first.

Uptime

From every hour on Free to every minute on Agency 100. A second check rules out a blip before anyone is alerted, and you hear again when the site is back.

Every plan

Certificates and domains

The padlock certificate and the domain name both run out. You're warned a month ahead, so neither lapses by surprise.

Every plan

Speed on phones and computers

A Lighthouse test in a controlled browser for both, plus what real Chrome visitors experience: how fast the page appears, reacts and stays still.

Every plan

Search (SEO) crawl

Titles, descriptions, headings, broken links, pages hidden from Google by mistake, sitemaps and robots files. The home page on Free; 25 to 500 pages a site on paid plans.

Every plan

Accessibility

Checked against the WCAG guidelines on every page of the crawl: missing labels, low contrast, images without descriptions, pages a screen reader can't follow.

Every plan

Blacklists

A daily look at Google's list of unsafe sites and the Spamhaus domain blocklist. Being on either can stop visitors and email overnight.

Every plan

Email and DNS

SPF, DMARC and DKIM checked daily, so mail reaches the inbox and can't easily be faked, with an alert when name servers or mail settings change.

Paid plans

Server and software

Software past its end of life, secret files left public (.env, .git, config backups), open folder listings, old encryption and missing security headers.

Paid plans

Cookies and trackers

A weekly visit as a first-time visitor sees the site, flagging tracking cookies and pixels that fire before anyone agrees.

Paid plans

Visual changes

A screenshot compared with the last one, so a layout broken by an update doesn't go unnoticed.

Paid plans

Structured data and redirects

The hidden details search engines read, such as opening hours, and redirect chains that loop or take too many steps.

Every plan

Unusual changes

An hourly look for sharp changes in uptime, speed or search scores against each site's own pattern, even when nothing is strictly broken.

Alerts

Told once, by the right person's favourite channel

When something breaks, TideStat tells you by email, Slack, Microsoft Teams or a webhook into your own tools, and again when it's fixed.

  • Each team member chooses their own alert emails
  • A test button on every channel, so you know it works before it matters
  • Real outages, not noise: drops under 5 minutes are shown as blips
Uptime tab: online 99.89% over 30 days, one outage of 5 minutes or more, usual answer time 0.90 seconds, checked every minute

Every site at a glance

Each site against its own normal

The overview gives every site a 30-day strip: a day is marked only when that site was down, slower or quieter on Google than usual for it. A total across sites would hide the one client in trouble.

  • Switch the strip between uptime, answer time and Google clicks
  • Worst first, with each site's speed on phones and fixes to do
  • “Needs you now” lists the few things that can't wait, such as a certificate about to run out
Your sites, last 30 days: each client site with a 30-day uptime strip, status, online rate, speed on phones and fixes to do

Monitoring questions

How often are sites checked?

Uptime every hour on Free, every 10 minutes on Agency 10, every 5 minutes on Business and Agency 25 and every minute on Agency 100. Speed checks run weekly, or daily from Agency 25; the search and accessibility crawl, structured data and redirects weekly; certificates, domains, blacklists and email daily.

Do I have to install anything?

No. Every check reads the site from outside, as a visitor or search engine would. WordPress sites can add an optional read-only plugin for what can only be seen from inside, such as updates waiting.

What counts as an outage?

When a site doesn't answer, TideStat checks again before it alerts anyone, so a single blip doesn't wake you. Outages of 5 minutes or more are counted and marked as outages; shorter drops are shown as blips, so a month of two-minute hiccups doesn't look like a disaster.

Where do the checks come from?

From one fixed server address. If a host's bot protection shows TideStat a “please wait” page, the site owner can let it through with one rule: see Allow TideStat.

Will checks slow the site down?

No. TideStat reads public pages at a considerate pace, the way a search engine does, and never logs in or fills in forms.
